  • Crazy Mama RAN!!!!!!!!!! The First Race in 2 YEARS!

Yes, you read right.  I RAN on October 24th!

A while back I signed up for the BLT 5km Fun Run/Walk out in Timberlea, Nova Scotia.  I needed to sign up for something to keep me going, and decided 5km was a good start.
This run is an out and back from the BLT Elementary School and most of the run is on a gravel trail.  This trail is super familiar to me because I have done many runs on this trail prepping for races in the past.
I did my mini carb load the night before (hello PIZZA!) and carried myself off to bed after midnight (oops).
I had no problem waking up.  None.  Excitement/Adrenaline had me awake well before my alarm went off!
Got myself some oatmeal, coffee and sat down to plan the race outfit de jour 🙂
It was chilly, so layers were in order.  Not too many though.  Pants for sure.
I dressed right away so I had no time to overthink anything.
I arrived early enough to pick up my race kit and ran into some of my friends, including Peter, who was volunteering 🙂  I also ran into my PT from knee surgery recovery, lol.  What are the odds??

Peter was excited to see me running again!**

I stayed inside the school and waited with some of the other runners until it was close to “go time” because it was chilly.

    Then, out I went.

    And stood mid pack.

Talked to my Twitter FitFam friend Myles and his lovely wife for a minute, just to shake the growing anxiety and remind myself that I AM A RUNNER, lol.
Then, the voice from the loudspeaker made the announcements, I was surrounded by runners, heard the word “GO” and off we went!
There I am – Top Far Right!  GO AMY GO!!!!!!!!!!
Now, previous races, I would have shot out of there like a cheetah.  But, having learned from this lesson (during the Valley Harvest 10km where I went out like a cheetah and wanted to barf my guts out halfway), I just kept a nice slowish pace to get myself warm.
I caught up to Myles’ lovely wife just after 1km and we ran for a bit until her walk break.
    Then, I was SOLO.
I picked up my pace a bit and passed a few people.  Stopped for a minute because I picked it up a little more than I should, lol.  Then I decided to find someone that had a decent pace (by feel) and stayed a bit behind them for the next couple of kms.
I reached the turnaround point feeling good.
Then I saw the 3km marker and lost it.

    Tears.

I had the moment I though I would have at the end.  The “HOLY CRAP I AM RUNNING IN AN EVENT” moment.
    3km.
But crying and running don’t really mix, mostly because you can’t see, so I stopped for a minute, wiped my eyes and kept going.
The last km has a hill.  BLECH.
    I walked up that hill.
    Because ME.
And then, the last 500m I put the pedal to medal and came in like a FREAKING GAZELLE:

    SEE HOW HAPPY I AM?!?!?!??!

    Super happy.

I was lucky to get a photo with my peeps afterward who were there to see my first race in forever!

    Time:  30mins 47secs.

    CRUSHED IT.

Now, I am attempting to plan out what my 2016 Race Calendar will look like.

And how to get that 30 mins to 25 or under, lol.

    Look out world.  I’M BACK!!!!

**Thanks to Paul Wesson Photography for taking the wicked awesome Race pics!
  • I RUN MY FIRST 5K NEXT SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    My First 5K….

    Man that sounds weird.

I think my last race was in 2013.

    2013.

    I gimped up in 2014.

Surgery and recovery for most of 2015.

    Am I ready?

    More than likely.

    Am I confident?

    No.  LOL.

I wanted my first “race” to be a shorter distance, a fun run.  Something with NO CHIP TIME, lol.  So the BLT 5km Fun Run was the winner 🙂

I will be in this pod of peeps next Saturday!!

Will I want to make a good time?

    Uh, DUH.

    Will it matter?

Nope, because I will be crying.  Before, possibly during, and most definitely after.

    What matters most?

The experience.  My first race back in 2 years.

    @crazymamaruns

  • Strength Training, Sole Sisters Race, and Life in General

    And so it begins…

My strength training has started back up.  My body is like…WHOA, what are this?
I may have lifted a little too much this week, so I am going to have to rethink my upper body weights a little, lol.  Lower body weights are just right, and my legs feel good.  Getting some cardio in on the elliptical and rowing machine and working my core as well.

    Lunchtime workouts -> Stress relievers!!
Having a gym in the office building is great!  It gets me away from my desk at lunch 😉

    And this weekend, we volunteered!

This weekend was Sole Sisters Race.   This is a race I have yet to run, but after TeenThing and I volunteered yesterday, she is all up for running it with her mom next year!
It was a very wet, rainy and chilly day, but 3200 women came out to walk and/or run with their moms, sisters, daughters and friends for what was a sea of purple tutu awesomeness.
Best part – the rain stopped before the race!

(Note: we had a bus debacle and got soaked walking to the event, lol)

    This tshirt is soooooo soft!

    Look at all these tutus!

    Thankfully the rain stopped!

And the start line filled up FAST!

Teen Thing and I working bag check!
It was a great day and great turnout!  I also ran into one of my @RunAtCan peeps and took a group photo for her!  But…..we forgot to take a pic with each other, lol.
They have added new distances for 2016.  If you are looking for a fun race to do with the ladies – check it out!!

    What else is shakin’?

Well, I made it through the step down off my meds.  It was touch and go there for a while.  Some crappy stuff happened and I was able to deal with my newfound coping skills, so, all good!
** Not saying this is a “Woohoo my life will be med free” journey, because I am a realist, but for now I am okay.
TeenThing has shown some interest in running, so since I am basically going to be starting over she is going to tag along 🙂  This is good, because it will keep me on a plan and not go bonkers when I lace up.
So for now, that is what’s going down around here.

    My FitBit?

I’m wearing it.  Not accepting any challenges.  Just seeing where it takes me.

So tune in next week….I’ll be keeping you in the loop about all things #crazymamaruns!

  • Not Gonna Lie…I’ve Been a Slacker

    Yes, I’ve Been Absent…

It’s not because I haven’t wanted to write, because I have a gazillion things in my brain, but a lot of life has gotten in the way.

I have been flat out at work, and when I get home, I have enough in me to make supper, do “something” and then crash.

Not a fantastic or ideal scenario, but as a single mom, sometimes this happens.

That’s right….sometimes, life DOES get in the way!

This has also affected my physical fitness, which means less yoga (but I was still doing my physio exercises – because my comeback is looming!).

I noticed how much I was affected IN A BIG WAY when I went for my massage therapy last Friday.

I haven’t had a massage in well over a year (bad Amy) and when I came out of that deep tissue massage, I was a different person.

I didn’t hurt immediately.  But by 9pm, I was super sleepy and sore.  Not a bad sore, but a “holy-crap-I-was-so-tight-this-feels-weird” sore.

We worked on my “running parts” – so everything from my lower back down was out of commission, lol.  It took a couple of days for everything to come back, but I can tell a difference for sure.  He also gave me some stretches which are making a big difference as well.

So….when do you think you will be running again?

I have been “cleared” for August.  And that was me saying “August is good, right?” to my PT.

Not saying I won’t listen, but if I continue my strength training and start as a beginner, I am hoping to start a run/walk in July.  This is so I can include my daughter in my training and hopefully foster a love of running in her, as she has shown interest (woop!).

    What about the gym?

This week has been a write off.  Two full day meeting with working lunches zapped me.  Small yoga shesh at home.  Wednesday was another day that I just had nothing and today, well I just wanted to get through today.

    My “Meh” Wednesday Face…

(TeenThing and I will be partaking in some sort of pilates/yoga/walk thing here shortly.)

    Are these excuses?  No.

In my short past life as a personal trainer, I would have said yes.  But, being a human being managing her mental illness, these are not excuses.  Stress takes a toll and with the anxiety lurking, it can knock me down.

I know that, for me, I need to take a step back and meditate, relax and sleep.  Physical activity sometimes, is just not an option.  My brain needs the step down.  My body will bounce back quicker.

    What about your FitBit?

I know you are all wondering about it.

It is still on my dresser.

Will I wear it again?  Yes.

    Next month?  Maybe.  We’ll see.

Now that I can confidently say it doesn’t define me as person, I will be comfortable putting it back on.

    Comeback Race?

Deciding.  Once I get a good solid running foundation under my belt, I will be able to book something confidently.

I have some lined up.  So come back soon to see what I’ve got up my sleeve!

  • BlueNose Marathon Weekend 2015 Expo with #RunAtCan – #Giver!

A Long Weekend Calls for a Race

And here in Halifax, the “May 2-4” Weekend is the BlueNose Marathon Race Weekend!
This was my very first race as a runner, so I am a little biased as to it’s awesomeness.

I did this on a whim – and haven’t looked back.
Halifax is hilly, so if you want a flat race, you won’t get that here!  Just check out #BNMarathon2015 or @BlueNoseMarathon to see pics 🙂
I could not race this year, as I am only cleared to run in August, so I hopped on the Volunteer train and signed up to hand out the bling!

    Race Expo

This year I was able to hang out with some of my super awesome Twitter fam at the Expo.  The Twitter Group @RunAtCan had a panel discussion on Social Media and Running.  The panel was great at sharing their experiences, their views on Social Media and what platform they found useful to connect with other runners.

Left to Right: Andrew Paris, Anna Sherwood, Andrew Chak and Paul Merrigan
Our Sunday Night #RunAtCan Twitter chats have grown from a small Atlantic Canadian group to folks from all over North America and beyond!  The #RunAtCan community is one I am proud to be a member of.  We have created a family, and I am very lucky to call these people my friends.

Group Shot with John Stanton 🙂  With Charlotte Flewelling and Durwin Brennan peeking out in the back.

    Vancouver MARATHON Finisher Nicola!  Wheeeeeee!

Photobombed by that Paul Merrigan while getting a shot with Renee!

    The awesome Krysten 🙂

The running community is amazing.  When I first started to run, I had no idea that there was this giant family of runners out there.  No matter what level you are at, there are always runners there to give you encouragement, advice and accolades.

    Race Day

I was up a 5:15am.  And there was SOME light.  Forecast was calling for 60% chance of showers.

Layering up – it was a little chilly!

Arrived at the Scotiabank Centre for my shift and took a few quick shots of the runners heading up to the Start Line.

    And….

    Here they come!

Look – my hand!  lol  And a little bit of rain…that’s Team Myles going up Carmichael!

You will definitely get an arm workout giving out the bling.  Some wicked bicep curls were going on for sure 😉  I worked with a fantastic group of people.  We cheered folks in and helped out some Marathoners walk down the hill into the Scotiabank Centre….yes, down the hill.  It rained a little bit at the start of the main races, but held off for the remainder!  Yay!

I was able to give SO MANY of my friends their medals, and I was able to meet SO MANY Twitter peeps!

    Steph – YOU ROCK!
I have said it before, and I will say it again, if you have the chance VOLUNTEER!  You get to see the “inner workings” of a race and you get to give back to the running community.
Next year, I am running the BlueNose, and I am hoping to PB for the half (2:10 is my time to beat).
To everyone that ran today, you all did AMAZING!  Congrats 🙂

  • It’s Almost Here.

    My date with the surgeon.

And I have my nervous face on.

I mean, I pretty much have a good idea about what is going to happen.  It’s just hearing him say it, and I can ask detailed questions about recovery.

I’ll be fine going into surgery.  I just know it won’t be pretty when I am done.

So, as of tomorrow it’s one week.  Let the finger chewing….BEGIN!

    It was turkey weekend here.

Canadian Thanksgiving.  Food, Family and what we are all thankful for…..TURKEY!  I had my share, both Sunday and the holiday Monday.  Some say our Thanksgiving coincides with the start of hockey season….and that is why we celebrate in October, lol.  Who am I to debate THAT!

Today was my turkey hangover.  It involved A LOT of coffee and water.  Bad combo for my Tuesday-Monday.

    What’s on my mind now??

Races.  When can I run them?  Will I ever do a full marathon? I have so many races that I want to do.  I’ll have to sit down and make a plan once I have full details of surgery and recovery.

So I am continuing with my yoga practice at home.  I will be volunteering the first weekend of November at the Lucky 7 Relay here in Haliwood, NS, and getting some runs in where I can.  (As long as my knee behaves!)

I was lucky on my Sunday run to tweak my stride a little and lead with my hips.  What a big difference that made!  I am learning more and more about my body and it’s mechanics as the years go by.  It is definitely an adventure, especially getting older and having injuries 😉

So, what does everyone do during their downtime?  Do you cross train more? Lift? Cycle? Swim?

I’d love to hear from you out there.  Drop me a comment!

  • Lessons Learned as a Relatively Newb Runner

I’ve always learned things the hard way.

And that also applies itself to running.  I’m stubborn too, which just adds to the problem, lol.

I first started running when I was working with a personal trainer at the gym.

It all started when one of the girls at my workplace started up a lunchtime run group.
The first day we ran 5km.  I felt like I was running on a cloud….oh wait, those were my new sneakers. BONUS POINT:  I had running sneakers.  I went out and bought a good pair of Sauconys.  Go me 🙂

I was hooked.  Running was awesome!

Problem #1: I was not stretching.  Not warming up.  Not like I should have been. This lead to some really tight legs after my very first 10km race (I had done a Run for the Cure 5km prior).

    And then……about a year later

Problem #2 – Stubborn: Since I was invincible, I began to train for my first Half Marathon.

Training was going well (at least I thought it was, lol) After my 18km long run, I felt AWESOME.  Went for another run, pain.  A lot of pain.  Right outside my knee.  I thought, okay, rest up.  This was one week before the race.  I was tight all the way up to my hip.  So I foam rolled and bought a strap for the old IT band at the race expo.

Day of the half…I ran, in pain, and finished at 2:30.  I walked a lot of the last few kms, but ran over the finish line.

I could barely walk the next day.  Off to doc and off to physio.  My IT band was shot…tightest EVER.

Was a long haul back and lesson learned.

Problem #3: Not listening to my body.  This applies to Problem #1 and #2.  I was not stretching and applying any serious cross training.  I thought some of the pain was “just a runner thing”.  Yes, I should have known better.

Another year later!  We are into year 3.

Problem #4:  Eat better, fuel better.  This took some work, as I love to eat and the more I ran, the more I wanted to EAT!  This caused some upset belly moments and some dehydration.  This is a big lesson for newb runners.

Half Marathon #2:  Trained smarter, pushed myself a little bit harder (sometimes a bit too much, felt kind of nauseous and had to stop a couple of times) and ran a 2:10.

I was going to run another Half, but was very very sick not long beforehand and did a 10k at the Valley Harvest Marathon. Because I am a dork and was full of running excitement, I went out too fast and wanted to barf halfway through.  Finished in under an hour and finally said, okay, smarten up.

I ran a 21k relay the next month, Lucky 7 Relay with a couple of people from work.  I ran my 7km in 38 minutes.  I felt like a ROCK STAR 🙂

    Heading into year 4…

I was running right up until the “Punta Cana Incident”.  We ran just about every morning around the resort nice and early, with the other runners.  Then I went and fell in the washroom (Yes, the washroom, and yes, I was sober).  This is the “awe man” moment when I was pretty sure I tore my meniscus, but found out I really have a condition called Osteochondritis Dissecans and I am due for surgery in the near future.

Once I am all “put back together” and travel down my road to recovery, I am getting back to the Half Marathon state and looking for a new PB.  With my new love of yoga and my wiser ways, I am starting my bucket list of races.  Need to kill that 2:10 Half!

Look out Half Marathon…..cause I am comin’ to get ya…..soon.

  • If you can’t run…Volunteer!

It keeps you in the “thick of it”

I’ve volunteered at two races here in Halifax so far.  One was the Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women: I was a Course Marshal.  The other: Info Booth Host at the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon (Youth Run and Race Day).

Volunteering is awesome.  Being able to volunteer at an event you usually run – super awesome.

I was able to still feel that little buzz on race day, even though I wasn’t running.  The energy is unforgettable.

Volunteering also gives you a whole new appreciation for what is involved for any size race.

So if you haven’t volunteered yet, I highly recommend it.  Especially if you’re injured 😉
